SUNRISES – SUNSETS ON LAKE THOREAU

We are always awed by the changing wave patterns and color of the water, the changing color and clouds in the sky, and the wonderful sunrises and sunsets on Lake Thoreau.

The past couple of days during the Spring Equinox, March 17 and 18th, have brought some amazing solar optics — “Sun Pillars” — which can only be photographed with a digital camera. I was very careful not to look at the sun while recording this phenomena.

  This image was taken about 7:30 am EDT — it will take about 2 minutes of viewing time.  Watch as a purple beam begins to form below the sun, a warm yellow beam forms at the top of the sun.  You can also see reddish circles at 45 degree angles below the sun, plus a somewhat wandering yellow disk below.
